Upgradation of Existing Cultural Facilities
With a view to provide platform for nourishment of the cultural activities in the Punjab, Information & Culture Department has launched following projects for revamping of existing cultural facilities and construction of new auditoriums / theaters etc.
Sargodha Arts Council
Sargodha city is the administrative center of Sargodha Division. Sargodha is 11th in the list of most populated metropolitan areas in Pakistan and 5th largest city in Punjab. However, there was no proper facility for presenting Art & Culture related activities at a higher scale and standard. Keeping in view the need of the area, an Auditorium with 500 seating capacity along with an Art Gallery and other related facilities is being constructed. The same will be available not only to the citizens of Sargodha city but the entire region comprising 03 other Districts i.e. Khushab, Bhakkar and Mianwali. State of the Art equipment would be installed in the Auditorium to enhance cultural performance, literary and entertainment activities.
Gujranwala Arts Council
Gujranwala is one of the largest regions of the Punjab Province. Gujranwala Arts Council is an institution of the Government of Punjab to cater healthy recreational and cultural activities in the region. With a view to facilitate masses, artists and organizations for presenting their Artistic Work, Cultural Performances and other allied activates, an Auditorium having 500 seating capacity is being constructed along with an Art Gallery and other Artistic Facilities. The Auditorium would be equipped with latest equipment.
Open Air Theatre, Bagh-e-Jinnah, Lahore
Open Air Theater was constructed on the pattern of Greek Theatre in 1941-42. In August, 1980, the theatre was declared as a part of Punjab Arts Council. This theatre has a capacity of 1000 seats while Punjab Hall has capacity of 200 seats. It is an exclusive venue which provides a place for holding various cultural activities by the people, students, colleges, NGOs and cultural and literary societies. Revamping includes provisions of professional sound system, modern stage lights and comfortable seating arrangements.
Al-Hamra Cultural Complex, Gaddafi Stadium
The Auditorium and Open Air Theater were constructed in the year 1989 and Art Gallery in 1996. Since its completion, no major up-gradation was carried out which was need of the hour. In addition, equipment was also outdated which needs to be replaced and upgraded.
Upgradation of Museums
In order to provide better visual experience to the visitors, Information & Culture Department has launched following projects for upgradation of museums:
Lahore Museum has launched this scheme with the view to provide conducive environment for protection and conservation of cultural heritage of Punjab, upgradation of crafts, preservation and restoration of art work. It is based on the repairing and uplifting of existing building of the museum and its environment since the building itself is a national heritage and contains artifacts and has to be conserved for itself and for the objects placed in it. Expansion and upgradation of conservation laboratories and documentation of the collection of the museum and related activities are also part of the scheme.
This museum is being upgraded by improving the existing facilities of conservation and preservation. At present, conservation laboratory is operational in the single room of the old building with the limited space to install equipment. Therefore, the main objective is to setup a modern conservation / preservation block which would be sufficient to properly install lab equipment and create a working environment to preserve / conserve rapidly decaying manuscripts, wooden & leather articles and metallic antiquities.
Promotion of Art & Culture
For promotion of art & culture in Punjab, the following projects are launched by the Information & Culture Department:
Chief Minister's Talent Hunt Program
The main objective of this project is to promote arts, crafts and culture through encouragement of artists, artisans, intellectuals and recognition of their services. Under this project, competitions will be organized at district, divisional and provincial levels. These competitions will cover 04 categories: music/singing, arts & crafts, performing arts and paintings.
Punjab Rung "FM-95"
Punjab has multi-dimensional cultural norms spread over its different parts. These unique cultural identities need promotion and projection through community development by meaningful radio broadcast. The project is launched to ensure 24 hours nonstop quality transmission in local dialects and language of the province.
The main objective of this project is to facilitate students and researchers for producing Punjabi Dictionary and History Books. It would facilitate both readers and researchers to know about customs, traditions and cultural norms of the Punjab and literary works of incompareable Punjabi poets and writers.
